Rediscover the pleasure of eating, one sense at the time. Eating does not only use taste. On the contrary, a complete and conscious culinary experience will involve all 5 of our senses. We invite you to ask yourself the following questions, before eating, to try this experiment:
Sight: Take the time to admire your food. Look at it as if it’s your first time seeing it. Notice the shapes, colours, the reflection of the light on its surface, the textures, etc. If you have a dish in front of you, look at the presentation. We not only eat with our taste buds, but also with our eyes. Do not forget this!
Hearing: What sound does the food make when you chew it? In your physical environment, what do you hear? How do those sounds make you feel?
Touch: What is the texture of the food on your palate, your tongue and your inner cheeks? Is it elastic, smooth or sticky?
Smell: What smells are prevalent? What do they make you think of? Are there memories attached?
Taste: What flavours do you perceive? Do some seasonings or ingredients stand out more than others?
Observe your more critical thoughts: “It is too fatty, not sweet enough.’ Recognize that they are there, without judging.
Enjoy the tasting!
